What is self-care and why should you practice self-care?
The beauty of self-care is that it’s different for everyone. What you consider self-care and how you practice self-care will depend on your own needs and desires. I asked multiple of my friends the question “What does self-care mean to you?” and “How do you practice self-care?” to show the ways self-care varies.
What does self-care mean to you?
“Mental health- it’s often forgotten when we think about taking care of ourselves. Physically we can be up to par but that means nothing if our minds aren’t matching our outside appearance.” – Kennedy
“Making sure I’m good mentally, emotionally, spiritually” – Shekinah
“Caring for your mind, body, and soul” – Marlayna
As for myself, I agree with all of the above. Self-care means caring for yourself. You cannot expect to help others if you are out of balance yourself. Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet we are constantly overlooking mental health. Fuel your body, mind and soul and watch how your life transforms.
How can you practice self-care?
“I personally throughout the day tell myself “you’re going to be good” and in those few words I remind myself that there’s nothing in this world that can stop me and I’m always going to be good regardless.”– Kennedy
“Care for your body by what you put on yourself and in yourself. Care for your mind by learning everyday, refresh it with positive energy. Care for your soul by being confident who you are, find faith within yourselves and treat others how you want to be treated” -Marlayna
“Meditation, aligning your chakras, eating healthy, reading positive books”– Shekinah
Personally, I try and schedule a little self-care each and every day and use Sunday as a complete self-care day. I love a quick meditation in the morning and right before bed to start my day and end it on a positive note.
Mentally, I make sure I get proper rest, eat good food for my brain to get proper nutrients, and talk about my problems. Holding your problems in does no good for yourself, or anyone involved. Need a green smoothie recipe? Check out my favorite recipe here.
Physically I try and get as much exercise as possible and take care of my skin and hair. Yoga, reformer pilates and good ol’ strength training is my favorite. A nice face mask or hair mask while relaxing does wodners.
Spiritually, I meditate and read biblical or spiritual verses out of a book everyday. Meditation has truly changed my life. Look forward to a post on meditation in the near future
It’s important to note self-care is a journey with no end. What your body needs will constantly change. How you practice self-care will change. What works for you, may not help someone else. When you get busy and do not have time to practice self-care, that is when its most important to take some time out of the day or week for yourself, even if it’s only 5 minutes. Often times we get so consumed by life we forget to take care of ourselves.
